Preparation for beach camping in Australia

Preparations in Advance

  • Understand the Weather and Tides: Keep a close eye on the weather forecast of the destination before traveling. The weather by the beach can be changeable, so try to avoid bad weather. At the same time, check the tide information. You can obtain it through tide tables or relevant apps to prevent the campsite from being flooded by high tides.
  • Confirm Regulations and Terrain: In advance, learn about the local management regulations regarding beach camping, such as whether a permit is required and the designated camping areas. Also, inspect the terrain and avoid dangerous areas.
  • Prepare Essential Items: Bring basic camping equipment such as tents, camping mats, sleeping bags, folding chairs, cooking utensils, and tableware. Due to the strong sunlight in Australia, be sure to prepare high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and other sun protection items, as well as mosquito repellent to prevent mosquito bites. Considering the strong winds and humidity by the sea, ensure that the tent has good waterproof performance. You can bring an extra camping mat or plastic sheet to lay under the sleeping bag and camping mat. If you plan to swim or engage in water activities, bring the corresponding equipment, such as swimsuits and goggles.

During the Camping

  • Choose and Set Up the Campsite: Select a high and flat area with a certain safe distance from the sea as the campsite. Stay away from areas where high tides and strong waves may occur. Before setting up the tent, clean up the debris on the ground to ensure the tent is set up firmly. You can use stones or other heavy objects to secure the four corners of the tent to prevent it from being blown down by the sea breeze.
  • Pay Attention to Sun Protection: When the sun is strong during the day, especially from 10 am to 4 pm when the ultraviolet rays are the strongest, try to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun. Apply sunscreen, wear sunglasses and hats when going out to protect your skin and eyes.
  • Cope with Sea Breeze and Humidity: The sea breeze is strong and the air humidity is high by the sea, especially at night and in the early morning. Wear windproof and warm clothing to keep your body dry. Place food and important items in moisture-proof containers or bags to prevent them from getting damp and damaged.
  • Pay Attention to Marine Safety: If you plan to swim or participate in water sports, be sure to choose areas patrolled by lifeguards and strictly abide by local marine safety regulations. Pay attention to warning signs. Do not swim in prohibited areas, and those who are not good at swimming should not go into the sea alone. Understand the situation of marine life in advance to avoid contact with poisonous or dangerous marine creatures.
  • Be Careful with Fire Safety: If you need to start a fire when camping by the beach, such as building a bonfire or using a stove, choose a safe location away from flammable materials and tents. Prepare fire extinguishing tools, such as fire extinguishers and buckets. Make sure the fire is completely extinguished after using it.
  • Maintain Environmental Hygiene: Keep the campsite clean. Put the garbage in garbage bags and take it to the designated garbage disposal site when you leave. Do not randomly damage the natural environment by the beach. Do not pick flowers and plants or damage the marine ecosystem such as coral.
  • Pay Attention to Food Storage: Store food properly to avoid attracting wild animals. Put food in sealed containers to prevent it from being eroded by the sea breeze and seawater. Dispose of food residues in a timely manner to keep the camping area clean and prevent odors from attracting insects or other animals.
